On 22nd November 2013, Mr. Shigenobu Kobayashi, Charge d’Affaires for the Embassy of Japan in Malawi and Right Rev. M.A. Mtumbuka, Bishop of the Diocese of Karonga signed a grant contract for the Project for Construction of Science and Biology Laboratories in Karonga District. The grant amount to USD 111,321 (about K45 million at present value) provided under the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects.

Lack of laboratory facilities is a challenge for many of community day secondary schools. This has heavily affected the ability of students to pass Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) and to access tertiary education. This grant will address this problem through the construction of science and biology laboratories at St. Anne’s and Furliwa CDSS and the procurement of laboratory equipment.

After the completion of the project, approximately 400 students will annually have access to the facility and the equipment to improve their understanding of science and biology. Most importantly, students in the target area will be able to compete for tertiary education in the country. The occasion was graced by Honourable Agness Chatipwa, the Deputy Minister of Education, Science and Technology.
